Every cheerleader needs to have great balance during their performance. Whether you are just getting started as a gymnast or you are looking to make the jump to flyer, balance is something everyone can improve. Today, the team at Gold Medal Gyms will share a few tips and simple exercises you can use to improve your balance.
Individual Exercises You Can Start on Your Own
1 – Standing Balance – If you have lots of trouble balancing, start with the basics. Simply standing on one foot while doing everyday tasks throughout your day can help. Stand on one foot while you brush your teeth or fix your hair. Once this becomes easy for you, try doing it on a pillow or folded towel to create a more uneven surface and up the difficulty.
After you have improved at standing on one foot for a few weeks, it is time to start a more advanced exercise.

2 – Movement-Based Balance – Set a ball on the ground in front of you. Start by standing on one foot with the other extended behind you, then slowly lead down to try to pick up the ball. While you do this exercise, think about maintaining a straight line from your arm to the opposite leg. After you grab the ball, slowly stand back up straight while maintaining your balance on one leg. Finally, repeat the movement by placing the ball back on the ground.
Not only does this exercise help you improve your balance and coordination, but the movement also mimics some of the more advanced cheer stunts like the arabesque.
3 – Core Development – A strong core is another way to improve control over your body. Abdominal exercises such as crunches, planks, and leg lifts can help you to stabilize if you begin to feel off-balance. Insert these exercises into your daily routine, and you will find yourself able to pull off any cheerleading stunt you set your mind to.
